Today, the release of the iOS 18.1 beta 4 has taken the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max camera to even greater heights, now enabling the capture of stunning spatial photos. Just last week, Apple announced the inclusion of spatial photo capture for the iPhone 16 lineup, but it’s exciting to know that this remarkable feature is also making its way to last year’s flagship models.
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have been capable of recording spatial videos since their launch last year. With the advent of iOS 18.1, users will discover a dedicated “Spatial” option within the Camera app, allowing for a seamless transition between capturing spatial videos and spatial photos. Apple provides the following explanation: “Record spatial photos and videos with remarkable depth for viewing on Apple Vision Pro in the Photos app. To achieve the best results, keep the iPhone in a landscape orientation and maintain stability during recording. Video is recorded at 30 frames per second in 1080p resolution. A minute of spatial video typically takes around 130 MB, while a spatial photo is approximately 5 MB.”
These spatial photos and videos can then be effortlessly viewed on Apple Vision Pro. Notably, visionOS 2 was released this week, granting users the ability to directly create spatial photos from any image in their library.
iOS 18.1 is currently available in the developer beta. During Apple’s iPhone 16 event last week, it was confirmed that iOS 18.1 along with the first Apple Intelligence features will debut in October.
